The scientist and the artist are very much the same type of creature.  Both do not choose to explore nature because it is useful.  It is because they delight in it, and it’s true beauty.  It is not that kind of beauty that is immediately apparent to the eye, although that is what first causes the infatuation and is a symptom of the genuine beauty of the natural world.  It is what lies behind the curtain that is so very exciting and captivating, what keeps the artists, scientists and explorers coming back for more.  It is the relationships that are so perfectly formed, the subtle functions that can only be understood by deep investigation that are the draw.  The scientist uses tools and technology while the artist uses sight, color and reflection.  The artist can take freedoms in observation much the way a boit breaks down the language and rebuilds it to suit the needs of the emotions and story.  Each pursuit is no more or less important to society than the other, one for the left of brained and one for the right I suppose.  As long as the seekers keep on seeking we should all be just fine.

“…this is my way of holding on to the relationship I once had with the land.”
