Like many other kids in the early 1980’s, in Seattle, little Smokin’ Joe’s parents bought him a shiny new Bundy II alto saxophone so he could join the school band. Little did he know those first few years would set the pace for his vast musical journey. At 15 he joined Second Wind a 10 piece Classic Rock, Soul, and R&B group which set the stage for his future professional career. Upon his arrival at Central Washington University he had an unfortunate accident, which relieved him of a portion of his left middle finger eliminating his ability to play for some time. After extensive physical therapy and 12 hour days in the wood shed Joe was able to regain his skills. He left C.W.U. and decided to tour the world on cruise ships as a musicial director and supervisor for Carnival Cruise Lines. It was there where he discovered that his light evening performance schedule allowed him full days at sea to hone in on his newly found arranging skills. The wide variety of entertainment on ships gave Joe a chance to arrange music for everything from headliners to Las Vegas style reviews. After 7 years of travelling, he decided to move to Las Vegas where he resides today. Joe is currently the assistant musical director at Legends in Concert on the Las Vegas strip where he performs nightly on sax, flute, keyboards, and percussion and is the the musical arranger for all 6 of their shows worldwide. As an arranger, composer, orchestrator, copyist or performer, Joe’s skills have put him in the mix with, Sheena Easton, Brian McKnight, Celine Dion, The O’Jays, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Brian Setzer, Tower of Power, Nell Carter, Sophie B. Hawkins, Crystal Gayle, Melissa Mancester, Wayne Newton, Little Anthony, Leslie Gore, the 5th Dimension, The Lon Bronson Band, and too many more to mention. In the year 2000 Joe made his television debut in Japan for TNC television with Liberty On The Street. He scored all of the music and conducted the orchestra on this 8 week, 27 city tour featuring a 12 piece gospel choir, 3 breakdancers, and the world renowned “Tap Dogs.” Upon returning to the USA Joe dove into writing for various local and national television shows including the Ron White Show a WB channel special event (co-arranged with Lon Bronson), the E! Channel’s The Entertainer featuring Wayne Newton, TBS’s Emmy Nominated Earth to America (co-arranged with Lon Bronson) produced by Larry David featuring Dustin Hoffman, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Leonardo Di’Caprio, Fatih Hill, Tim McGraw, Jason Alexander, Jennifer Lewis, Cedric The Entertainer, Wanda Sykes, Ben Stiller, and many more, and The Vegas Show featuring Sheena Easton and Brian McKnight and Howie Mandel. In August of 2006 Smokin’ Joe finally broke into film, scoring the music for his first motion picture titled The Tears of a King, the controversial tale of Elvis Presley’s final days. His ability to capture the sound of a musical period made him the right choice for the film and hopefully many more. Now at the early age of 33, Joe has written over 1000 musical arrangements for production shows, television, film, radio, celebrities, lounges, and education worldwide. His comfortable style and attention to detail has earned him much acclaim as an arranger/composer yet he still continues to study and learn daily with the hopes of passing his music on to the next generation in the effort to keeping live music alive and kicking.
