Magic Sam is a live performance band that does both covers and original music. The band formed in 2002 and continues with its original members. Magic Sam performs music from six decades, and includes country, folk, and acoustic-rock. Both Ron and Steve are accomplished guitarists, but the band’s real strength lies in their strong vocals and harmonies. Magic Sam’s Megan Colby provided female vocals and percussion. She started singing as a little girl in talent shows and choir, and began voice lessons at 16. Opera and jazz studies followed. Megan is equally at home with country, pop, and contemporary music. She possesses power and control that enhances every Magic Sam performance. No one can believe that Steve Mendenhall, one of Magic Sam’s founders, has been performing for over 45 years. He has been around long enough to have grown up listening to Elvis, yet still possesses the musical enthusiasm of any 30-year-old, which is why Magic Sam’s “generational collaboration” works so well. He is an electric guitar-totin’ singer/songwriter whose 1971 band The Sands of Time released one of the first self-produced LP’s in the country. Ron Hulsebus, Magic Sam’s other co-founder, has also been performing for over four decades. While he played a pretty scorching electric rhythm guitar for a few 60’s-era rock bands, his real musical roots are in folk and folk-rock. Ron is also a singer/songwriter, and is Magic Sam’s acoustic guitarist.
